Masala Meals was an idea born, like most of our ideas, at the dining table. In our family we were lucky to grow up with home cooked Indian meals daily. Until we left for college, we did not realize how lucky we were. Once left to cook for ourselves, we realized it was really hard! It seemed you needed a pantry full of spices to just make one dish. Somehow Amma (our mom) made it seem very easy, even with a full-time job. We probed her for the secrets and found the keys were 1) a pressure cooker and 2) spice blends.
Amma gave us each a pressure cooker and tins of spice blends that she and our Ajji (her mother) would grind by hand. We found that having the spice blend really did simplify the process of cooking with the end result a healthy, delicious, and authentic meal. These blends formed the basis of our MasalaMixes. Our friends tested the blends and found that Indian cooking was actually pretty simple once you know the basic steps and have the spices.
In discussing this one night around the table, the idea for Masala Meals was born. We had been contemplating the idea of teaching cooking classes after encouragement by many friends who often asked us for tips. We combined our talents and pursued this endeavor together as a family.
Our mission is to motivate people to both cook and eat healthful, flavorful, and Indian plant-based meals at home through teaching informative cooking classes, selling MasalaMix spice blends to simplify cooking, and introducing communities to flavors through prepared foods. We encourage the use of beans, lentils, whole grains, and fresh produce. Our prepared foods incorporate our proprietary MasalaMix spice blends and are based on recipes handed down over many generations. Much of our food is also based on Ayurvedic principles.
We love food and we love cooking! We want to teach you how to use food as medicine, and to have it taste delicious. We hope you will join our community and come cook and eat with us.
